After "The Wall" was opened in 1989, hundreds of
artists from all over the world gathered and transformed the east side of
the wall in celebration and reflection of this freedom achieved. With the recognition of its special connection of the past and to the present, an artists
initiative was formed to preserve this "gallery" and later won Historical
Monument status for the 1.3 kilometer section of the wall, now called the
East Side Gallery. The Künstlerinitiative (Artists Initiative) East Side Gallery e.V. also forges a
"vision" of heightened international interest in human rights issues and freedom for
peoples everywhere.
Through the artists initiative and supporters of the
East Side Gallery, two of the over 100 paintings have now been restored.
The painting by Günther Schaefer;
"Vaterland" (Fatherland) was restored with the
financial help of a private company, the LOBAU Company in 1997 and the
painting by Narendra K. Jain; "Stufen der Erleuchtung" was restored by
The Historical Society Gustrow in 1998. Regrettably, these are the only
two preserved. The many other paintings are weathered and
flaking, and
the wall they are on is crumbling. It is this
association's hope to
restore them, not only as an act against forgetting but as an inspiration
in action for those who are not yet free.
Please, we need your support.
